The brief called for a building that would house the various physics, chemistry and biology departments in a single building. The site comprised a rather confused collection of 1 and 2 storey buildings containing some laboratories and support rooms with a small area of vacant land to the west.

The design proposals had to take into account the logistics of construction of the new science department whilst at the same time retaining sufficient laboratory and support space to allow the school’s curriculum to proceed unhindered during the build process.
