The extension was designed as a separate building with only a minimal link to the existing grade II listed Arts and Crafts building designed by E S Prior and constructed in 1904. Three acoustically independent towers were created, each with a suite of teaching and practice rooms. Ensemble rooms were created at roof level using butterfly roof forms to create acoustically bright and reverberant spaces.
